Miscellaneous Links

As sites are found that seem particularly interesting or useful, and that don't fit under one of the other categories on the main page, they will appear here.

  • Critical Ceramics - Newly discovered site, filled with good stuff, including excellent links. There is a good article on the Color and Fire show at LACMA last year. There are other articles, and also pages of shows to enter, current exhibitions, reviews, and much more. Good to Bookmark on your browser.
  • This is a Multilingual Dictionary! Found through the page above, but clicking here will take you to it directly. Useful for bookmarking, and accessing when you have a non-native-English-speaking student.
  • Sicilian Ceramics - Although this is a tourist site, the information about ceramics is concise and accurate. There is an especially interesting Editor's Note at the end, explaining why they don't name any ceramists by name! Every tourist should read it.
  • One of the best web sites for ceramic artists is that of San Diego State University. This site has an extensive glaze database, compiled over several years through the ceramic community in the USA.
  • Selling your work? This article by Garth Clark, which appeared in Ceramics Monthly, will be must reading for anyone who wants to think of themselves as a "Professional" clay artist.

NCECA
stands for the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts. It is the national (and international) organization for potters, and there is a grand conference every year. It is a gathering to learn and to make professional contacts, for teachers and students to attend, to meet friends and ex-students, and to be just about completely immersed in ceramic art for a few days. Miscellaneous NCECA photos taken in Ohio and Denver can be seen on this page.

Magazines - All of these are excellent magazines; each has a different slant. On the San Diego State University site, there is a longer list, but it may be impossible to list all, as more and more journals are brought to my attention every year. (I'm told there is a very good Spanish publication...)
  • Ceramics Monthly (Excellent American magazine which has been published for at least the last 50 years.)
  • Clay Times (Relativlely new magazine on the American market. Good articles.)
  • Art and Perception (THE most important international magazine on the market today! From Australia.)
  • Ceramics Technical (Same editor as above - also from Australia, and excellent!)
  • Studio Potter (American magazine published since 1972, also with international bent.)
  • Ceramic Review (British magazine - excellent - one of my favorites!)
  • kerameiki techni (From Greece - an international ceramic art review published in English, with translated insert in Greek!)
  • La Revue de la Ceramique et du Verre (From France, with a few synopses in English - the photographs - let's face it, that's what most of us look for - are wonderful and inspiring!)

Good Miscellaneous Clay Links

  • Ah Leon - Smithsonian Magazine - This article describes the making and installation of Ah Leon's Bridge at the time it was installed in the Sackler Gallery of Art.
  • To explore the Terracotta Army in Xian, China, this site has some great photos: (Click on the image to go there.)

Good Pot Pages (for inspiration)

  • "Mug Shots 2000" Ceramic Invitational Exhibition featuring mugs created by some of the finest ceramic artists in the United States!

Ceramic Work Centers (for classes, visits, etc.) There are so many of these that it would be impossible to list them all. Go to this page for a comprehensive list. Here are just a few of the best known centers:
