Other than the Clay and Wine events, there have been many other guest artists who have enriched the program in various ways at Napa Valley College. This page is a "scrapbook" of the various memories of those visits.

One of the first workshops we had, other than a Clay and Wine event, was this workshop with Arne Ase in 1985. Arne returned a few times to Napa as a friend. Apparently, he only gave three workshops in the USA: one in Oregon, one at Alfred, and this workshop in Napa. He is the author of one book, and the subject of another. He wrote Watercolor on Clay, and is the subject of From Bowl to Art, by Gunnar Danbolt. They both have beautiful photographs of his work. A major installation of a hanging panel is in the British Airways building in London.

Students have also come back to the college to share their expertise after leaving the ceramics program. One of them, "Marble Mike," became a legend. While at the college, he made marbles - lots and lots of marbles! He perfected glazing them by doing all of his glaze tests on marbles. The last count I was given was over 2000 marbles. He later developed a layering technique that he used to form bottles, trays, and vases, and that is what he demonstrated when he came to share with a new generation of students. In cleaning out my office, I came across this picture of Michael Maday giving his demonstration. (Click on image for larger view.)

Another ex-student workshop:
This is a picture of Scott Parady giving a demonstration when he, Karen Winograde, and Lois Tselentis came to do a joint workshop. (I'll try to round up pictures of Karen and Lois on the same day.) This same picture is on the page of pre-faculty pictures of Scott at the college.
